Whilst I do accept commissions for varied genres, including portrait, I work mainly in landscape, which fuels most of my painting obsessions,
I explore many aspects of landscape but I am drawn particularly to visual intrigue:- a landscape only partially revealed, behind a hedge, a wall or other barrier/screen (now you see me, now you don’t). I like landscape which generates questions:- what is around that corner, over that hill? This is often coupled with a sense of time and of journey. Of course I will also respond to landscape simply and directly, with little or no agenda, allowing the landscape to dictate any emotional/expressive response. As a consequence I enjoy a varied approach to the choice of materials, from paint-only, through heavy mixed media to full 3D. Wherever I travel I record. Dorset, Pembrokeshire, Scotland, Portugal and Hong Kong are all frequently visited and generate unique and specific landscape potential.

I prefer to work on several pieces concurrently, since I feel that they can bear upon each other, and I can get bored very easily! At the moment I am working on the following:-
Hedges and hedgerows. Hedges are natural boundary markers, and they hide so much! Now you see me, now you don’t..peep shows, looking through gaps. These boundaries are a wealth of visual interest at all times of the year. An impending development for this series is a move into sculptural totems.
Tarbet Ness, Ross-Shire. At the moment to describe this as ‘current’ is pointless, since it is a constantly evolving series, worked from annual visits. The most recent return was June 2022 to this favourite location. Different times; different viewpoints; different weather—-this bay never ceases to deliver something new to excite/intrigue me. Again, several pieces from the series were on show at The Willow Gallery, Oswestry
Hong Kong. I’ve given up attempting to quantify the myriad stimulii for my visits here. I am working on two sets of works. Firstly, stacking images based on the ‘human landscape’ prompted by the volume of people in the teeming city, presented as paintings and 3D ‘totems’ Secondly, currently being developed, a series of images exploring barriers of mangrove in the bay of the village of Kei Ling Ha San Wai, and the strangely fascinating deserted island of Yim Tin Sai.
Earth Forts..this is a project currently in concept only. An exploration of Iron Age forts, with specific reference to the encompassing landscapes No! it’s not history in pictures ! Most of these happen to have occupied commanding positions in the landscape…so I want to work from the same viewpoint.
My travels have allowed me to record. Scotland, Dorset, Pembrokeshire, Portugal, Hong Kong, all offering unique and specific landscape potential. Difficulties during 2020 / 2022 meant my work had been researched much closer to home, in the Cheshire and Shropshire landscapes….
Currently, I am working on a series of works (paintings, monoprints , and 3D…landscape totems) based on hedges and boundaries.Research for this is from a variety of sources and locations.
